Julio Jones to be examined Wednesday, fantasy owners holding their breath

The Falcons wide receiver is flying to Charlotte on Wednesday to have his foot injury re-evaluated. We break down the fantasy implications.

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones is traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina on Wednesday to get a second opinion on his injured right foot according to a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's D. Orlando Ledbetter. Jones has been the Falcons top pass catcher this year, posting 41 catches for 580 yards and two touchdowns through the team's first five games this season.

Fantasy impact: The news of Jones’ season possibly being over comes as a big shock to fantasy owners and Falcons fans alike. There is concern that Jones’ surgically repaired foot that was initially under the knife back in 2011 will need to have screws re-inserted in it. In a news conference on Tuesday, head coach Mike Smith stated initial test results were not encouraging.

Jones had previously been questionable at practice throughout this year with knee concerns, but no one really envisioned him having foot problems again, since he had shown little to no ill effects in that regard up until Monday night's game against the New York Jets.

With teammate Roddy White (ankle, hamstring) struggling through injuries of his own and likely missing game time himself once the team comes of its bye in Week 6, Harry Douglas and Drew Davis would step in as the team's top two receivers alongside tight end Tony Gonzalez.

The Falcons’ surprisingly woeful season may be doomed, and fantasy owners of Jones should be looking to add Douglas off of the waiver wire, though it will cost a hansom free agent bid in order to do so.
