College football news: Clemson rolls past Georgia Tech, Alabama lands top recruit

The Tigers cruised to a convincing win against Georgia Tech, and Alabama picked up a commitment from a five-star defensive end.

Clemson tops Georgia Tech 55-31, Boyd injures collarbone

As late as the third quarter, Georgia Tech looked like it might at least give Clemson at least a modest scare, but the Yellow Jackets could not keep up with the Tigers on Tajh Boyd’s record-setting night. Boyd left the game at the end of the third quarter after suffering a bruised collarbone. The injury initially looked quite serious, but Boyd returned to the sideline, was seen warming up, and appeared eager to get back into the game. But Clemson had the game well-in-hand at that point, and there was no need to risk further injury to its star signal-caller.

Da’Shawn Hand picks ‘Bama

For most of his recruitment, Michigan seemed to be the most likely destination for defensive end prospect Da’Shawn Hand, but the five-star prospect committed the Crimson Tide over the Wolverines and Florida Gators on Thursday. Alabama projects to finish with the top-ranked class once Signing Day 2014 rolls around, leaving everyone to wonder when Alabama will finally catch a break.

Murphy could miss South Carolina game

The Florida Gators may be without starting quarterback Tyler Murphy when they play South Carolina on Saturday. Murphy, who ascended to the starting role after Jeff Driskel broke his leg on Sept. 21, has missed practice all week with a shoulder injury. If Murphy is unable to play, redshirt freshman Skyler Mornhinwheg would start in his place, although senior wide receiver Trey Burton could also take some snaps in the Wildcat formation.

Silas Redd out vs. Stanford

Southern Cal once had a deep and talented offensive backfield, but that depth will be tested on Saturday against Stanford. The Trojans will be without running back Silas Redd, who suffered a knee injury last Saturday during the third quarter of USC’s 62-28 win against Cal. Tre Madden, Southern Cal’s leading rusher, is probable with a lingering hamstring issue. Justin Davis, Southern Cal’s third-leading rusher, is out for the rest of the year with an ankle injury.
