Adam Taggart signs one-year extension at Newcastle Jets

The A-League’s leading scorer is just 20-years-old and will stay with the Jets for a third season after inking an extension this week.

Adam Taggart will return to the Hunter Stadium for a third year after signing a one-year extension with Newcastle Jets on Thursday, according to a club press release. The 20-year-old came to Newcastle in early 2012 from Perth Glory but did not become a major scoring threat until this season. Taggart, who scored just twice in eighteen appearances last season, has already notched six goals in this year’s seven matches, including all three for the Jets in their 3-1 rout of Melbourne Heart last weekend.

This season’s form has followed an explosive set of full international appearances where he scored three times in the Eat Asia Cup for the Socceroos. Though it took him, and to be fair the entire Jets team, several games to get warmed up, Taggart has been on a scoring tear over the past month.

Jets CEO Robbie Middleby expressed delight in retaining the up-and-coming striker:

“We are obviously really excited to re-sign Adam and to secure his future at the club. We believe he is one of the most promising talents in the country. It has been wonderful to see Adam’s development during his time at the Jets and we look forward to that continuing next season.”

With Marquee Player Emile Heskey sidelined for much of this season so far, or at the very least out of the starting XI, Taggart has taken his chance to impress and done so with aplomb. He's not just scoring goals but tallying brilliant strikes to dishearten opponents and lift the Jets from their early season slumber. Holding a new contract should keep his mind on the field instead of worrying about what might come next, which could be even more trouble for Newcastle's A-League foes.
