John Aloisi’s sacking earlier on Sunday morning led to speculation about who might replace him as manager of Melbourne Heart FC. The club are ending any such discussion by announcing John van’t Schip as the interim manager for the remainder of the 2013/14 season. van’t Schip, who was Aloisi’s predacessor, has been in a consultancy role with Heart’s academy after a short-lived spell as manager of Mexican giants Guadalajara.

van’t Schip returned to Heart in the offseason, penning a deal to be based in Europe but spend some time in Melbourne developing the club’s academy. The former Twente and Ajax manager has been in Australia recently but is currently in Europe and will need to fly to Melbourne this week ahead of Heart’s Sunday match in Gosford against Central Coast Mariners.

Whether or not van’t Schip is a legitimate long-term option remains unknown, especially with the impending sale of the club and potential for change in opinion and direction. But for now, Heart have a manager to see out the utter calamity that has been the 2013/14 season. van’t Schip will get two away games as his re-start with the club before getting his home ‘debut’ on January 17 against Newcastle Jets.

The club has not yet posted a press release with the details.
