Phillies shopping Domonic Brown

The Phillies are reportedly looking to sell high on their young outfielder in order to get some pitching in return.

The Phillies are reportedly shopping outfielder Domonic Brown in order to get some young pitching in return, according to Jeff Passan.

The 26-year-old Brown enjoyed a breakout season in 2013 as he finally earned a full-time job in the Phillies’ outfield. He socked 27 home runs and was selected to his first All-Star team. Brown, a former top prospect, took a while to get his footing in the big leagues. He saw his first action with the big league club in 2010, but was up and down between Philly and AAA Lehigh Valley through 2012. The Phillies may not be totally sold on his breakout though, as Passan notes they could be looking to “sell high on him.”

The Phillies are looking to bounce back from a forgettable 2013, as they posted a disappointing 73-89 record. It was their first season with a losing record since 2002. They went to the postseason five straight years from '07 to 2011, including their World Series win in 2008. But they missed the playoffs in 2012 and seemed to bottom out in 2013. Now with Roy Halladay retiring and Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins getting older, they may be looking to build around their aging core for one more run at the World Series. Trading Brown could help to that end.

They are also reportedly looking to deal Jonathan Papelbon in order to free up salary. Papelbon is owed $26 million over the next two seasons and they could spend that money to help the team in other areas. The Phillies could look dramatically different in 2014, and Philly fans are certainly hoping it is for the better.
