Danica Patrick reacts to Dayton 500 pole win

The first woman in history to earn the pole at a Sprint Cup race was pleased with the results, but already focused on next week’s task.

Jerry Markland

Danica Patrick was the fastest driver on the track Sunday, winning the pole for the 2013 Daytona 500. It marks the first time in history that a woman won the pole in that race, or any Sprint Cup race for that matter.

Patrick was fairly subdued in comments afterward. She thanked her racing team, from the sponsors to the pit crew, and noted that the real test was next week when Daytona 500 race itself takes place, with Patrick’s car lined up in the top spot to start. She talked about the long process of getting the car ready for the race, and praised Stewart-Haas teammate Tony Stewart, whose qualifying time Patrick beat on Sunday.

Earning the pole caps off a week of practice. She set the top speed in practice on Saturday.

The Daytona 500 takes place Sunday, Feb. 24, with the green flag scheduled to drop at 1:05 p.m. ET.
