Miami falls 3 spots to No. 5 in AP Top 25

The Hurricanes suffered a one-sided loss to Wake Forest, but they managed to remain in the top five of the AP Poll.

After falling at Wake Forest, 80-65, on Saturday, the Miami Hurricanes dropped three spots to No. 5 in this week's Associated Press Top 25. Indiana, which won at Michigan State, 72-68, on Wednesday, remained the top team in the poll and received 64 of 65 first-place votes

Gonzaga defeated Santa Clara and San Diego last week and moved up to No. 2 in this week’s poll, the highest ranking in school history. The Bulldogs picked up one first-place vote and now sit at 27-2 on the year. Duke defeated Virginia Tech and Boston College and moved up to No. 3, and Michigan, coming off a win over Illinois, improved to No. 4.

With no truly dominant major conference teams, mid-majors are finding their way into the rankings. This week’s poll features six teams from smaller conferences, including newcomers St. Louis at No. 18 and Louisiana Tech at No. 25.

Aside from the Billikens, Georgetown made the biggest jump. The Hoyas moved up four spots to No. 7 thanks to wins over DePaul and Syracuse. Michigan State and Marquette suffered the biggest drops, falling five spots to No. 9 and No. 22, respectively.

Two teams fell out of the poll. Colorado State, which was ranked No. 22 last week, lost to UNLV and New Mexico. VCU, which was ranked No. 24, defeated Xavier Saturday, but that was after a loss to St. Louis Tuesday.
