Veteran center Eric Belanger has been placed on injured reserve by the Edmonton Oilers after blocking a few too many shots in Saturday's loss to the Colorado Avalanche, the team announced on Sunday via Twitter.

Belanger was first forced to head to the locker after taking a shot off his foot, then later in the game after taking another shot off his hand or arm. The 35-year old center did not return after leaving with the arm injury and will now have at least seven days to rehab after heading to IR.

The loss of Belanger leaves the Oilers without an experienced faceoff center, as Shawn Horcoff has yet to return from a concussion that kept him sidelined for two games. Belanger has no points and 8 PIM through eight games, yet has been one of the best faceoff centers for the Oil this season and has received considerable time on the penalty kill this year.

The Oilers next face the Vancouver Canucks on Monday, with the puck dropping at 9:30 p.m. ET.
