An enterprising Padres fan, beaten down by years of losing, low payrolls, and lies from ownership, made a documentary film, Padres, The Sad Truth. His aim? To pressure San Diego’s owners to put their money (a considerable sum, courtesy of revenue sharing) where their mouths are, by inciting a fan boycott.
Fan revolt in San Diego
My favorite part of his story:
Game 1 of [the 1998 NLDS], he had ditched his sixth-grade class to go home and watch as Kevin Brown fanned 16 Astros in a 2-1 San Diego win.
“I literally just got up and walked out of class and went home,” he said. “My fourth-grade teacher put the playoff games on the radio [in 1996]. My sixth-grade teacher wouldn’t. And I just said, ‘I’m watching the Padres.’”
You can watch the film here. It runs about 35 minutes.
