Texas A&M, Texas Tech could resume Big 12 rivalry

Texas Tech would like to renew the football series with longtime in-state rival Texas A&M.

Conference realignment is generally awful, and one of the main reasons is because it kills historic rivalries. When Texas A&M moved to the SEC, the Aggies’ yearly tussle with Texas Tech fell by the wayside, but both sides may be working to renew the annual showdown, according to Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News.

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt told reporters in Lubbock Thursday that he would like renew the series against Texas A&M:

“We would welcome the opportunity to play Texas A&M in every sport,” Hocutt said. “It was a fun rivalry, a good rivalry and one in the future that we can begin again.”

The two sides haven’t had discussions regarding the idea, per Carlton, but Texas A&M athletic director Eric Hyman said, “We would welcome the idea.”

Tech and A&M have met on the gridiron 70 times, and the schools squared off every season from 1957-2011. The rivalry has been tightly contested over the years, as the Aggies hold a 37-32-1 all-time advantage. From 1995-2008, the Red Raiders won 11-of-14 meetings, but A&M won the final three as a member of the Big 12.
