NFL pro day 2013: Keith Pough, Greg Reid looking to impress on Monday’s pro day

A number of smaller schools are holding pro days on Monday, and Howard’s Keith Pough is the biggest name in the crop.

USA TODAY Sports

Monday's lineup of pro days features a number of smaller schools, giving NFL scouts a chance at some overlooked prospects that might be late-round steals. Keith Pough out of Howard is one of the more notable players to have his pro day on Monday, but Air Force, Albany State, Delaware State, Houston, Idaho State, Memphis, Montana State, Valdosta State, Villanova and Wake Forest are also active.

Pough’s 4.9 40-yard dash time at the combine wasn’t quite as low as scouts were hoping to see from a linebacker who relies on athleticism to make plays in the backfield, leaving his projections stuck in the third round. If he can make an impression on his pro day, he might convince someone to take a chance in an earlier round.

Justin Wilson and Travis Tarpley are two wide receivers who will be looking to impress at Delaware State’s pro day. Wilson has 2,416 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns in his career, while Tarpley led the team in 2012 with 1,058 yards and seven touchdowns. Both will need impressive performances to land on anyone’s big board.

Idaho State’s Josh Hill may have caught someone’s eye when he snagged a reception in the 2013 East West Shrine Bowl. He likely has the attention of at least a few teams, but will need a very strong pro day to make the draft.
Caleb Schreibeis, defensive end from the Montana State Bobcats, has a good shot at sixth or seventh round pick. Schreibeis set a school record in 2012 with eight forced fumbles and had 12.5 sacks. Zach Minter is another defensive standout from the Bobcats who will look to impress on Monday.

Valdosta State has a pair of players looking to prove themselves as worth a late-round pick, including a former FSU Seminole, Greg Reid. Reid was dismissed from the team after repeated violations of team rules, and landed with his hometown team. A torn ACL kept him off the field for all of 2012, but rather than return for his senior year, he’s taking his chance at the draft. Without a recent season to show a rebound after leaving FSU, his pro day is one of his only chances to make a mark. Ryan Schraeder, an offensive tackle, is another Valdosta State player who will be getting a look on Monday.

Villanova’s pro day will showcase Norman White, a first-team All-Colonial selection who had 45 receptions for 550 yards in 2012.

There are a lot of long-shot prospects in Monday’s selection of pro days, but there’s a lot of opportunity in the late rounds of the NFL draft. Teams look at a lot of different things, and one of these small school stars just might have what someone is looking for.
