Thursday’s New Jersey Devils-Carolina Hurricanes game had a bizarre feeling to it in general, for obvious reasons, but things took an even weirder turn in the third period when, all of a sudden, Hurricanes goaltender Dan Ellis was showing blood on his hands and leaving the ice with less than a minute to go.

The Hurricanes goaltender suffered the injury seemingly out of nowhere in the third period against New Jersey last night.

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Ellis suffered a leg laceration and could miss “one or two weeks”. On the previous rush up the ice, Devils forward Patrik Elias had come in on goal and come close to the goaltender, but didn’t appear to clip him or anything, making Ellis leaving all the more strange. Justin Peters finished the game, as Carolina fell to New Jersey 4-1.
The injury comes at a time when the Hurricanes are already short in goal, as Cam Ward is still recovering from an MCL sprain that could keep him out a few more weeks. Peters will likely be forced to carry the load. Ellis had been getting the lion’s share of the starting duties in his absence, and had been playing rather decently. Ellis is 4-5-1 on the season with a .918 save percentage and a 2.65 goals against average.
