Eric Wright trade rumors: Buccaneers shopping CB, according to report

The Buccaneers had two cornerbacks who served four-game suspensions in 2012 for violations of the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy. Aqib Talib was traded to New England after his suspension, and Tampa Bay is now looking to do the same with Eric Wright.

Pro Football Talk is citing a league source Saturday that claims the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking for trade partners for cornerback Eric Wright.

Wright, who was suspended for four games of the 2012 season for a violation of the league’s policy against performance-enhancing substances, forfeited the $7.75 million guarantee he had in his contract for 2013. Tampa Bay was 6-4 and had won four consecutive games before Wright missed their Week 12 game against Atlanta. They lost, and Wright was suspended for the next four games. He was activated for the team’s Week 17 game, but did not play in it. The Buccaneers finished 7-9, missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.

Wright admitted to using Adderall, the same banned substance former Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib allegedly tested positive for in 2012. Talib was traded to New England after he served his suspension.

Considering Wright has base salaries of $7.25 million in 2014, $7.25 million in 2015, and $7.5 million in 2016, according to PFT, it’s unlikely any team will agree to a trade without Wright agreeing to a significant reduction of that contract. Tampa Bay could end up simply releasing him.

Wright, a second-round pick by Cleveland in 2007, signed a one-year free agent deal with the Detroit Lions in 2011. He parlayed the 2011 season into a five-year $37.5 million deal with Tampa Bay in 2012.
