NEW ORLEANS — Revolutionary outkicked long shot Mylute to win the 100th running of the Louisiana Derby and secure a spot in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. Long shots Hip Four Sixtynine and Titletown Five battled tooth and nail during the early stages of the race, and set quick fractions of 22.84 and 46.34 seconds for the first half mile. The pace began to falter on the far turn, and that’s when the winner made his move to the front. Revolutionary took command at the top of the lane held off the late charge of Mylute for the victory.

Departing and the hard-closing Golden Soul rounded out the top four finishers.

Revolutionary is a three-year-old colt by War Pass out of the A.P. Indy mare, Runup the Colors. He is trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Javier Castellano. This is the third straight victory for Revolutionary and his second stakes win.

Run for the first time in 1894, the Louisiana Derby was originally named the Crescent City Derby and was won by Buckwa at a distance of one mile. After a two-year hiatus, the Louisiana Derby returned in 1897 under its current name and at the distance of a mile and an eighth. Meadowthorpe won that race and the share of the $2,000 purse (about $55,000 in today’s dollars).

The 2013 version of the Louisiana Derby is part of the official Road to the Kentucky Derby series sponsored by Churchill Downs. The top four finishers in the race all receive points towards a spot in the starting gate in Louisville.

Earlier on the card, Unlimited Budget won the Fair Grounds Oaks and Graydar won the New Orleans Handicap.
