BNP Paribas Open 2013 results: Nalbandian and Hewitt advance, Granollers and Baghdatis fall

The first round of the men’s draw at the 2013 Paribas Open began Thursday, with 16 matches played. All seeded players received byes into the second round of the 96-player field, so Thursday and Friday matches are exclusively between unseeded players.

The top-rated unseeded player in the Paribas Open field, Marcel Granollers, was summarily dispatched by veteran David Nalbandian in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Former U.S. Open and Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt needed three sets to see off the challenge of Lukas Rosol, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Qualifier Daniel Brands upset Marcos Baghdatis 6-0, 7-6(3). Denis Istomin defeated Canadian Vasek Pospisil in straight sets and earned the right to be dismantled in the second round by Roger Federer. The only American in action Thursday, qualifier Wayne Odesnik, defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets and will next face No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka.

On the women’s side, first-round play concluded with [Melanie Oudin-Madison Keys result]. Elsewhere, a pair of promising young Brits were sent home early, as Heather Watson was knocked out in straight sets at the hands of Irina-Camelia Begu, 6-2, 6-4, and Laura Robson lost in three sets to Sofia Arvidsson 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-1. Monica Niculescu moved into the second round without losing a game, crushing Elina Svitolina 6-0, 6-0.

Second-round play in the womens’ draw begins Friday, while the men finish the first round.
