East Carolina has suspended running back Vintavious Cooper for an on-campus drug-related citation, the school announced Friday. Cooper, the Pirates' leading rusher in 2012, was suspended indefinitely.

Cooper was cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana Thursday night, per the Associated Press. East Carolina head coach Ruffin McNeill suspended him Friday morning.
Cooper, who will be a senior this season, is coming off a fine year with ECU. He rushed for 1,049 yards, which ranked fourth in Conference USA, and his 200 carries during 2012 also ranked fourth while his 80.7 yards per game ranked seventh in the conference. Cooper was the first Pirate to gain at least 1,000 in a season since Dominique Lindsay picked up 1,180 yards in 2009.
The 5’9, 189-pound back from Homerville, Ga., had four 100-yard games in 2012, and he rushed for at least 121 yards in all of them. Cooper totaled seven touchdowns and averaged 5.2 yards per carry.
