NASCAR Texas 2013: Kyle Larson narrowly avoids crashing into cleanup truck

Kyle Larson almost collided with a cleanup truck during Friday’s Nationwide Series race, narrowly avoiding disaster.

For the second time in as many years, a NASCAR driver almost made contact with a safety vehicle.

The incident occurred at Texas Motor Speedway in the middle of a Nationwide Series race when Kyle Larson was speeding down the backstretch during a caution period, blew a tire and veered left toward the back of a cleanup truck circling the track.

Larson was able to squeeze his car between the truck and the retaining wall, narrowly missing the vehicle and certain disaster. He had just pitted for two fresh tires following a spin and was attempting to catch back up to the field when the near-calamity took place.

A rookie in Nationwide, Larson, ironically, drives for the same team as Juan Pablo Montoya, who in the 2012 Daytona 500, suffered a parts failure under yellow and slammed into a jet dryer.

The ensuing contact created a giant fireball, which delayed the Daytona 500 for over two-hours. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured.

Larson was also involved in a harrowing accident in February during the Daytona Nationwide race when his car got airborne and flew into the catchfence located on the frontstretch. Debris from the crash was scattered throughout the grandstand, injuring more than 30 spectators.
