Kentucky Derby 2013 schedule: Events begin Tuesday

The Derby is almost here, and the contenders soon will know their post positions for the race.

Matthew Stockman

Festivities at Churchill Downs begin this week in preparation for the 2013 Kentucky Derby this Saturday. Races will be held at the track beginning Tuesday, and the post position draw for the Derby will be held on Wednesday. Coverage of the draw is tentatively scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. ET Wednesday; it will be televised by the NBC Sports Network.

Following the draw, the week’s first big event is the Kentucky Oaks, which is set for Friday evening. Post time for that race is set for approximately 5:45 p.m. What follows Saturday is another full day of racing, and NBC’s coverage of the 139th Kentucky Derby will begin at 4 p.m. The race itself will not begin until closer to 6:30 p.m., though.
