TBS host Conan O’Brien finally united two of basketball’s two most famous analysts, but sadly, it wasn’t for a game.
Conan O’Brien finally united Charles Barkley and Dick Vitale
The two titans of basketball broadcasting finally put together... but sadly, it was only for a comedy sketch on ‘Conan.’

Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated, along with many basketball fans, have been craving to see Dick Vitale of ESPN and Charles Barkley of Turner Sports call a basketball game together. ESPN, Barkley and Vitale have all signed off on it, but apparently Turner is the lone holdout. Well, hopefully fellow Turner employee O’Brien has shown them what they’re missing out on.
Conan’s TBS late-night show -- Conan -- has been taping in Atlanta for a week of shows, and has Sir Charles on as a guest last night. Conversations turned to the idea of broadcasting a game with Dickie V, Conan finally found a way to get them together if only briefly: for a recurring sketch on the show which features rejected sports mascots attempting to dunk. The mascots are funny in their own right.
For example, here’s Morbidly Obese Colonel Sanders:
Then there’s Superman with His Cape Stuck in a Toilet:
Mister BLT
And the coup de grace, the Peachtree Tower in Atlanta with Erectile Dysfunction
If you’re still with me, congratulations on having watched all of that. Here’s more of Barkley’s visit with Conan and Vitale, which features some good-natured ribbing, and the suggestion that, hey Turner, make this happen for real!
