Kentucky Derby 2013: Weather Outlook

Will conditions be wet and muddy for the 2013 Kentucky Derby? Meteorologist Brian Neudorff gives us a first look at the weather forecast.

A storm system stalling over the central part of the United States will pump moisture into Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley for the end of the week and into the weekend. This will increase the chance of showers and even isolated thunderstorms for Friday’s Kentucky Oaks race and Saturday’s 139th running of the Kentucky Derby. It’s starting to look like we could have a sloppy track for Saturday’s race.

Of the two race days at Churchill Downs, Friday looks to be the driest with just a threat of scattered showers and possible thunderstorms. Temperatures will be in the mid to low 70s for the Kentucky Oaks. There is still a lot of uncertainty for Saturday. This storm system over the plains is going to move slowly towards the east. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to say for sure where it goes. Location of this storm system could mean a very wet Saturday or just a chance of rain.

My current weather forecast for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday is calling for cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. Rain showers possible Saturday morning with off and on showers into the afternoon and evening. This could make for a sloppy track instead of a fast dry track.
