Kentucky Derby 2013: Post positions and morning-line odds

The field is set for the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Andy Lyons

Florida Derby winner Orb drew post position 16 and is the 7/2 morning-line favorite to win the 2013 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Orb is trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, who is seeking the first Kentucky Derby win of his career. Wood Memorial winner Verrazano drew post position 14 and is the second choice on the morning line at odds of 4/1.

The connections of Verrazano had to be breathing a sigh of relief as post positions one and two were still on the board before their colt’s name was called. Drawing post 14, Verrazano will be outside of several horses that like to show early speed, specifically Falling Sky, Oxbow and Santa Anita Derby winner Goldencents.

Revolutionary, winner of the Louisiana Derby, and three-time Kentucky Derby winning-jockey Calvin Borel drew post position three, a spot that will allow Borel to take his patented rail trip around the Churchill Downs main track.

Black Onyx, winner of the Spiral Stakes, drew the dreaded rail spot where he’ll have very small margin for error when breaking from the gate.

Fear the Kitten is an alternate entry and will only run in the Derby should one of the other 20 horses drop out prior to Saturday.

Five horses share the honor of longest shot on the morning line at odds of 50/1: Black Onyx, Golden Soul, Giant Finish, Falling Sky and Frac Daddy.

Post time for the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby is 6:24 p.m. ET with television coverage provided by NBC. The Derby undercard will be televised by NBC Sport Network from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
