Historically, losing Game 1 of a super regional puts a serious damper on a team’s chances of advancing to Omaha. Since 2009, the team that lost the first game of a super was eliminated 25 out of 32 times. That trend held true over the weekend, as South Carolina and Oregon State were only two of seven clubs able to overcome opening losses and tie the series (Virginia still has an outside shot at doing so as well, but we’ll get back to that). South Carolina avenged its walk-off loss by hammering North Carolina 8-0 Sunday, and Oregon State bounced back with a 14-4 win over Kansas State.
NCAA Baseball Tournament 2013 schedule and TV coverage: South Carolina, Oregon State try to defy the odds
While Mississippi State tries to close out its rain-delayed game with Virginia, the Gamecocks and Beavers try to overcome statistical probabilities and advance to Omaha.

Both teams now have the opportunity to cement their statuses as statistical exceptions with wins on Monday. These are now one-and-done, winner-takes-all games, so expect an even higher level of intensity as the schools fight for their CWS lives.
Mississippi State and Virginia were suspended in the seventh inning on Sunday night, and that game will resume at 4 p.m. ET Monday. Mississippi State leads 5-3, but Virginia is batting and scored two runs in the previous inning to cut the deficit to two. Should the Cavaliers complete the rally, Game 3 will take place 55 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.
