English extended the Gamecocks’ lead to 4-2 with an RBI double later that inning.
Trent Thorton pitched 4⅔ innings to earn the win, giving up three earned runs on three hits and striking out four, and Kent Emanuel came in with one out in the ninth to earn the save. Adam Westmoreland took the loss for South Carolina, going 3⅓ innings and allowing three earned runs.
This will be the Tar Heels’ 10th trip to Omaha, but they are still searching for their first title.
