Marcos Flores nears Melbourne Victory exit

Last season’s big recruitment would be jettisoned in favor of Giorgos Karagounis, if the Greek captain completes his move to Melbourne.

Marcos Flores will be the casualty of Giorgos Karagounis’ arrival at Melbourne Victory if Ange Postecoglou can in fact bring in the Greek captain. Despite having a year left on his two-year contract, Flores would be shipped out to make room for Karagounis as the Victory’s foreign Marquee Player, according to Postecoglou on FourFourTwo Australia.

The 27-year-old Argentine won the Johnny Warren medal as the A-League’s player of the year in 2010/11 with Adelaide United before spending a season with relegation-bound Chinese Super League side Henan Jianye. Flores’ return to the A-League at Victory last season was supposed to be among the league’s most significant recruitments but average production and second billing to young Marco Rojas (since departed for Stuttgart) has raised doubts about Flores’ value as a Marquee Player.

Karagounis, who has not yet signed with the Victory, is said to be considering offers from European clubs including Panathinaikos. Postecoglou blamed the A-League’s limited Marquee Player options for Flores’ potential exit, speaking after training on Tuesday, which Flores attended:

“It’s no secret that I’m trying to sign a new Marquee. And unfortunately it’s just the way the system is in Australia that means I have to lose someone to make space.”

Were Flores to leave the Victory, he would very likely be a prized commodity for other A-League clubs, though his high wage demands could make an intra-Australian move less feasible. Perhaps a return to Asia or South America could be in Flores’ future, but for now he remains with the Victory with rumors swirling all around.
