College World Series 2013 schedule: Oregon State vs. Indiana is Wednesday’s lone game

The Beavers are trying to replicate their 2006 Omaha appearance by bouncing back from an opening loss to win the national championship. Indiana is looking to keep its magical run alive.

USA TODAY Sports

With two teams eliminated (Louisville and LSU) and two teams waiting in the group finals (Mississippi State and UCLA), we’re down to one game per day for Wednesday and Thursday.

First up is No. 3 Oregon State against Indiana in an elimination game on Wednesday. Oregon State lost its CWS opener to Mississippi State, then bounced back in the losers’ bracket to beat Louisville on Monday. Indiana has played the same games in the opposite order: beginning the round with a victory over Louisville before falling to Mississippi State.

The majority of this matchup’s intrigue comes when Oregon State takes the field against Indiana’s lineup. The Hoosiers led the Big Ten with a .306 team batting average and have scored more runs (53) and hit more homers (6) than any other team in Omaha. They’ll face an OSU pitching staff ranked second in the nation with a 2.34 ERA. They’ve not been quite as sharp in tournament play, allowing batters to hit about 20 points higher than their season average of .216, but they still have the rotation depth to dominate anyone on any night.

The Beavers are expected to run senior lefty Matt Boyd (10-4, 2.18 ERA) out to the mound to face Indiana’s righty sophomore Aaron Slegers (9-1, 2.13 ERA). Boyd was tagged with the loss in OSU’s game against Mississippi State, giving up the winning run in the eighth inning after being called in for relief. His last start came against Kansas State in the Corvallis Super, a game the Beavers lost despite his strong seven-inning, one-run performance. Slegers’ last action came in a no decision in Indiana’s win over Florida State in the second round, when he gave up five runs in 4⅓.
