College World Series 2013: Wes Rea would have made one hell of a football player

Mississippi State’s massive first baseman was once a highly sought-after offensive line prospect.

If you’ve been watching the College World Series and wondering what kind of football player Mississippi State’s 6’5, 270-pound first baseman, Wes Rea, would make, the answer’s apparently a pretty damn good one:

That’s a screen capture of Rea’s Rivals profile, which shows the one-time offensive line prospect out of Gulfport, Miss., received no less than 14 offers to play major college football. Those aren’t just any offers either. Those are seven SEC offers, with LSU among them.

According to The Commercial Appeal, Rea took official football recruiting visits to Alabama and LSU, but decided to stick with baseball.

That’s looking like a smart decision now that he and the Bulldogs are competing in college baseball’s national championship against UCLA. Rea is currently batting .351 in the NCAA Tournament with eight RBI and a home run.

You would think picking baseball is helping him avoid contact, but as we found out in Monday’s finals game, that’s not entirely true:
