The University of San Francisco has produced a few quality pitching prospects in recent years and Alex Balog could join Aaron Poreda and Kyle Zimmer as first-round MLB Draft picks.
2013 MLB Draft scouting report round-up: RHP Alex Balog
San Francisco’s Alex Balog could be selected in the first round of the MLB Draft.
At 6’6 and 225 pounds, Balog has the size scouts look for in a MLB starting pitcher. He has some quality stuff to go along with it, including a fastball which is often clocked in the mid-90s. While his fastball may be his best offering, Balog also throws a curveball, slider and changeup.
Balog started 13 games during the regular season, finishing with a 3-3 record and 3.69 ERA. He struck out 63 batters in 85-1/3 innings pitched. Opponents hit .278 off of Balog this season, while also drawing 30 walks.

What they’re saying
- MLB.com: “USF’s Saturday starter has the chance to have three Major League average or better pitches, with a fastball that touches 93 mph with some sink, a sharp slider that has good bite when he stays on top of it and a deceptive changeup with fade and sink.”
- Prospect Digest: “Balog has the size scouts crave - 6-6 and 225 pounds - but the production has failed to impress. And statistically speaking, there’s really no reason to believe that he will be anything more than organizational depth right now.”
