Could Ray McCallum Jr. be a possible second-round sleeper? The Detroit product is off the national radar, but he could be a useful NBA player.

POSITION: Point guard

MEASUREMENTS: 6’2, 191 pounds, 6’3.25 wingspan, 8’0.5 standing reach.

RELEVANT ADVANCED STATS: 13.1% defensive rebounding percentage this season. McCallum is an athletic player with a nose for the basketball who can contribute in a lot of different categories.

JONATHAN TJARKS’ ANALYSIS

Unlike most NBA prospects from low-major conferences, Ray McCallum wasn’t overlooked in high school. He was a Top 50 recruit who passed up a number of big schools to play for his dad.

As a sophomore, he got Detroit to the NCAA Tournament for the first time this millenium. As a junior, he was the Horizon League Player of the Year, averaging 19 points, five rebounds and 4.5 assists on 49 percent shooting.

At 6’2 and 190 pounds with a 6’3 wingspan, he has good size for a point guard at the next level. He’s also surprisingly athletic, with a 40’ vertical that makes him a threat to finish in traffic.

McCallum is a fairly complete player, with the ability to run point, create his own shot, shoot from deep, defend and rebound his position. While he will need to improve as a three-point shooter, a lot of those misses came on contested shots at the end of the clock -- ones he won’t need to take at the next level.

At a minimum, McCallum could be one of the better backup point guards in the NBA. His ceiling is probably Jarrett Jack without the insanity, good or bad.
