NBA Draft 2013: Ricky Ledo scouting report

SCHOOL: He signed with Providence, but sat out his freshman year due to academics

RELEVANT ADVANCED STATS: 0. That’s the number of college games Ledo played in before declaring for the draft

Ricky Ledo is the great “known unknown” of this draft. After sitting out his freshman season at Providence due to academics, he declared for the draft as a sight unseen.

The recruiting services are hardly perfect, but in the absence of any actual game tape, they indicate he could be a good NBA player. He was a McDonald’s All-American, ranked No. 6 in the class of 2012, ahead of guys like Anthony Bennett and Marcus Smart.

At 6’6 and 200 pounds with a 6’7 wingspan, Ledo has the size to be a shooting guard at the next level. While he didn’t blow away with the athletic testing at the Combine, he more than held his own.

However, without any statistics, it’s anyone’s guess how his skill-set translates into game competition. The lack of game reps in over a year isn’t his only red flag either.

That’s quite a thing to say, even anonymously.

Jeff Goodman, now at ESPN, wrote this after Ledo committed to Providence in 2011:

Many of those who have suited up alongside Ledo aren’t enamored with him because of his unwillingness to be a quality teammate -- and the attitude he often displays.

Ledo’s record this past July, at one point, was 1-10. The last high-level guy who had a mark like that one was Renardo Sidney, and um, look what’s happened with him.

Let’s hope I am wrong about Ledo - and he winds up academically qualifying and buying into his role as a member of a team.

However, I’m skeptical.

Where Ledo ultimately ends up being drafted will depend on his private workouts and personal interviews with NBA teams. He may end up being a second-round steal similar to Lance Stephenson, but I’m not in the position to say either way.

SLC Dunk:

A draft prospect that I believe will be the steal of this year’s draft is Ricky Ledo.

On day 1 of the combine he was the most talented player that worked out. Yes. Better than Shabazz. Better than Gobert. Better than Olynyk. Better than Tim Hardaway Jr. He was the real deal. The second day he came back to earth a little bit. He’s extremely talented. He’s going to be a fast riser. I want this man in a Jazz uniform next year.

Denver Stiffs:

“[Ledo’s] a talented scorer and a terrific athlete,” said [Nuggets lead scout Mike] Bratz. “At the wing position, that’s who you are going to be facing on a nightly basis in the NBA. You have to be a good athlete and you have to be able to shoot the ball and he can do that.”
