Tyson Gay failed multiple drug tests, per reports

Tyson Gay reportedly failed multiple drug tests this year in addition to his out-of-competition test on May 16.

Tyson Gay failed multiple drug tests this year, the Associated Press reported on Friday. One of the world-class sprinter’s positive tests came at the U.S. championships in June, according to the report, where Gay won the 100- and 200-meter races.

Gay previously admitted to failing an out-of-competition test on May 16 and the status of his results from the national championships were already in doubt. Gay has already pulled out of next month’s world championships and has also reportedly been notified by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency about the failed test at nationals, though the latter is pending a testing of his “B” sample.

Gay did not reveal what substance triggered the positive test and was reportedly “teary-eyed” when speaking with reporters in regards to the May 16 failure. The report also states that a person familiar with the case told the AP that “multiple positives over a short period of time are a sign of an athlete who wasn’t trying to hide anything, but simply didn’t know he was taking a banned drug.”

Gay is reportedly cooperating with USADA.
