NBC’s Winter Olympic coverage will feature Al Michaels and Apolo Anton Ohno

NBC’s 2014 Winter Olympics coverage will feature the talents of two men as associated with the Winter Games, past and present, as anyone else.

The network announced on Saturday that Al Michaels and Apolo Anton Ohno have officially joined the likely massive cast of characters NBC will employ during the two weeks of coverage in Sochi. It was the first official talent announcement that the Peacock has made regarding the Sochi games. The announcement was made at the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.

Michaels, the voice of Football Night in America on NBC, has contributed as a studio host to NBC’s last two Olympic broadcasts in Vancouver and London. He will serve a similar role to the one he served in those two games. Michaels will host weekday afternoon coverage on NBC Sports Network and weekend daytime coverage on NBC. It will be Michaels’ seventh Olympics overall, as he worked the games in 1972 on NBC, as well as 1980, 1984 and 1988 for ABC. The 1980 Olympics are forever synonymous with Michaels’ call of the United States’ hockey win over the Soviet Union.

Ohno, the most decorated Winter Olympian in U.S. history, will contribute to areas both in and out of his expertise in Sochi. Ohno will become NBC’s lead analyst for short track, and will also provide features and studio commentary for the network. He provided the latter for much of NBC’s 2012 Olympic coverage in London.

NBC’s 2014 Olympic coverage begins Thursday, Feb. 6, a full day before the Opening Ceremonies.
