Sixteen Sprint Cup Series teams had illegal parts confiscated by NASCAR during inspection prior to practice Thursday at Daytona International Speedway, according to multiple reports.

NASCAR confiscated illegal parts from 16 Sprint Cup teams prior to Thursday’s practice at Daytona.

The nonconforming parts were spacers connected to the roof flaps, which deploy in an effort to keep the car from getting airborne if it gets sideways. The teams were allowed to replace the spacers before practicing.
The Cup drivers whose cars were found in violation were Aric Almirola, Marcos Ambrose, Trevor Bayne, Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Jamie McMurray, Casey Mears, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Martin Truex Jr. and Michael Waltrip, according to The Sporting News.
Collectively, nine Toyotas, six Fords and one Chevrolet were involved.
“It’s hard to say (about penalties),” NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp told The Sporting News. “They weren’t in compliance with the kits that the manufacturer provide them for those particular pieces of hardware.”
Shortly after the discovery of the infractions in the Cup garage, NASCAR officials found similar issues in the Nationwide Series garage. All together 15 Nationwide teams had illegal spacers confiscated.
The Nationwide drivers affected were Michael Annett, Trevor Bayne, Mike Bliss, Kyle Busch, Landon Cassill, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Matt Kenseth, Blake Koch, Travis Pastrana, Robert Richardson Jr., Reed Sorenson, Dexter Stacey, Brian Vickers, Jason White and Cole Whitt, according to the Motor Racing Network.
Any penalties stemming from the confiscated spacers would likely be announced Tuesday.
