Bobby Ryan traded to Senators

In the wake of Daniel Alfredsson leaving the team, the Ottawa Senators made a big move to possibly give them a new big-name scorer.

The Senators acquired Bobby Ryan, a four-time 30-goal scorer, on Friday from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forwards Jakob Silfverberg and Stefan Noesen, as well as a first-round draft pick in 2014. The 26-year-old Ryan has been in perpetual trade rumors ever since the Ducks gave contract extensions to Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

For Ottawa, it’s a big splash on a day when the team lost their captain, a player that had been with their team for 18 years, to free agency, and seemingly all of a sudden they add a new, younger star who has potted 30 goals in each of his last four full NHL seasons. Ryan had just 11 goals in 2012-13, but had put up no fewer than 31 in each of the prior four seasons.

Silfverberg, 22, is a player a lot of people project to be a top six forward at the NHL level. He put up 10 goals and 19 points in 48 games last season, with increased responsibilities due to a lot of players on the Senators getting hurt. He made his NHL debut for Ottawa in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoff before settling into a regular role this past season.

Noesen, 20, just finished his career playing for the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL, and is slated to go pro this season. The first-round pick will be in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
