NHL free agency: Isles re-sign Travis Hamonic to 7-year deal
The Isles keep their 22-year old defenseman for a long term at a fairly low cap hit.

The club announced on Friday that they’ve re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Travis Hamonic to a 7-year deal worth $27 million, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday. The deal comes with an annual cap hit of approximately $3.85 million. The deal takes away four years of restricted free agency and three years of unrestricted free agency for the 22-year-old defenseman.
Hamonic just spent his third full season with the Islanders, playing in all 48 games and putting up 10 points. He was tasked with stopping the opposing team’s top forwards, including Evgeni Malkin in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He’s gone down in points each season he’s been in the league (26 to to 24 to 10), but his value to the Isles as a defensive defenseman has gone up each season.
