Dwight Howard free agency: Mavericks are out the running, per report

The Mavericks will not be adding the superstar center to their roster this summer.

The Dallas Mavericks have been notified that Dwight Howard will not sign with them this summer, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. Dallas is the first team to be crossed off Howard's list with the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks all remaining in the running.

The Mavericks were the fourth team to make a presentation to Howard and reportedly spent three hours on Tuesday discussing their plans for the future.

The group that met with Howard reportedly included Mark Cuban, Dirk Nowitzki, president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson, head coach Rick Carlisle, athletic trainer Casey Smith and director of analytics Roland Beech. Scarce details emerged from the meeting, however, leading Cuban to address the silence regarding the discussion by saying that the Mavericks"never talk about what they do as part of their team policy.

Howard has apparently decided to pass on the opportunity to play alongside Nowitzki, who has stated he would be willing to take a “significant” pay cut in order to attract free agents to Dallas.

With one team apparently eliminated from the Howard sweepstakes, four teams still anxiously await his final decision.
