MLB news roundup: Biogenesis, David Ortiz defends A-Rod, Jason Heyward has surgery
There was a healthy assortment of news around baseball on Thursday. We’ve got it all for you right here.

Porter Fischer, the former marketing director at the now-defunct Biogenesis clinic appeared before a grand jury this week and provided the court with some 800+ pages of documents on the PED supplier, documents that MLB has been eager to get their hands on.
Biogenesis client Alex Rodriguez doesn’t have many people to defend him these days, but Red Sox star David Ortiz was willing to just that, stating that he didn’t like his teammate Ryan Dempster’s decision to throw at the embattled Yankees third baseman during a game last week.
While A-Rod’s beaning may have spilled more ink, the errant Jon Niese pitch that hit Braves right fielder Jason Heyward had far more serious consequences. Heyward underwent surgery on Thursday to repair two fractures in his jawbone. Heyward will likely miss the remainder of the season as a result.
In another scary scene, Giants pitcher Matt Cain was hit in his pitching arm by a line drive off the bat of Pirates first baseman Gaby Sanchez and had to leave the game on Thursday. Fortunately, X-Rays did not reveal any structural damage to his forearm and it appears that he escaped with just a contusion.
Fear not, fans of quality broadcasting! It looks like we’ll be getting at least one more season of Vin Scully saying, “It’s time for Dodger baseball.”
