I spent a lot of afternoons in the car with my dad driving to stuff. During those trips, we would usually listen to Mike and the Mad Dog, a legendary-only-in-New York radio program featuring two gentlemen who screamed at each other about Jason Giambi for about 20 years. New Yorkers love stuff like that, so the tandem (Mike Francesa and Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo) became local broadcasting icons, to the point where they would often do play-by-play for various events, including the Big East basketball tournament.

The somewhat famous New York-area radio host will launch a daily program on the network next spring.

Believe it or not, it has been five years since the two split up, with Francesa keeping their timeslot and their old show on WFAN in New York, while Russo has hosted a show (as well as his own channel) on SiriusXM. He’s made some sporadic appearances on MLB Network lately, which may have led to his new deal, which was announced yesterday.
Russo signed a multi-year extension with SiriusXM that keeps his program and channel running on the satellite provider. He also joins MLB Network as an on-air talent. Starting in spring 2014, Russo will launch his own daily baseball talk show on MLB Net, which will be simulcast on MLB Network Radio. It’ll likely either be geared towards mornings or early afternoon, as Russo’s regular radio program (Mad Dog Unleashed) airs from 3-6 p.m. ET.
The Mad Dog’s new baseball chat program joins an ever-increasing lineup of talk shows on MLB Network, including Intentional Talk, The Rundown and MLB Now.
