Thursday at the U.S. Open saw some of the biggest names in tennis advance to the third round at Flushing Meadows, but the highlights of the day were the upset of women’s No. 4 seed Sara Errani and the four-set win by American male John Isner, the No. 13 seed.
U.S. Open 2013 bracket update: John Isner advances to 3rd round
American No. 13 seed John Isner advanced in New York with a four-set win. The notable upset on Thursday was women’s No. 4 seed Sara Errani falling in straight sets.


Errani fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta, an early second-round exit for a 2012 semifinalist. Pennetta, who had seven aces to zero for Errani, will face No., 27 Svetlana Kuznetsova next in the third round.
The rest of the top-seeded women in play on Thursday advanced, including straight-set victories for No. 1 Serena Williams, No. 2 Victoria Azarenka, No. 6 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 7 Petra Kvitova and No. 9 Jelena Jankovic. No. 8 Angelique Kerber needed three sets to defeat 19-year-old Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.
Isner beat Gael Monfils 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 under the lights, winning the tiebreak 7-4 to take the match. Isner advances to face No. 22 Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round.
No. 2 Rafael Nadal, No. 7 Roger Federer and No. 8 Richard Gasquet advanced in straight sets, while No. 4 seed David Ferrer needed four sets to dispatch Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.
