Floyd Mayweather’s next fight: Boxing’s pound-for-pound king says he’ll return May 3, 2014

The big question coming out of Floyd Mayweather’s dominant victory over Canelo Alvarez -- majority decision nonsense aside -- is “what’s next?”

Mayweather spoke at the press conference following the bout and said that the date of his next fight would be May 3, 2014.

That’s perfectly in line with Mayweather’s career plan. 2013 as the first time he’d fought twice in a year since 2007, that was the year he retired for almost two years. 2007 was also the last time that Mayweather fought on a weekend that wasn’t Cinco De Mayo or Mexican Independence Day weekend.

So he wasn’t likely to fight again this year, and is targeting Cinco De Mayo weekend again.

As for who Mayweather will face, Scott Christ at Bad Left Hook had some thoughts on that:

The question will soon turn to Mayweather’s next opponent, of course, but it could be a while before we have an answer there. Danny Garcia (27-0, 16 KO) is a potential opponent now after his win tonight over Lucas Matthysse, but the winner of a potential December 7 fight between Devon Alexander and Amir Khan also figures to factor into the decision, particularly if it’s Khan, a fighter Golden Boy seems desperate to get into a Mayweather fight, perhaps if only to get that one true “big fight” out of his career.

Khan seems like a good possibility if he beats Alexander, but his chin is a huge issue and I doubt he could make it five rounds without getting knocked out. Devon Alexander is somebody that the public doesn’t knw and wouldn’t be an easy sell.

Garcia is intriguing, but how much sense does it make? He’s at 140 pounds, Floyd just beat the king at 154 (at a 152 pound catchweight) so it could seem odd for him to take on a guy who fights most 15 pounds lighter. But Garcia is probably the most competitive option on paper. Though it’d be a risk for Golden Boy and Garcia’s camp to have him risk losing his undefeated record right as he’s starting to gain momentum.

There’s plenty of time for it to develop over the coming months and Mayweather, Golden Boy and Showtime are sure to try to make the decision that will be best for everyone’s bottom line.
