John Erskine knocks linesman out of the way

Get out of the way, ref. John Erskine wants to fight.

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine really wanted a piece of Dion Phaneuf early in the second period on Friday night, and linesman Mark Shewchyk made the mistake of getting in the way.

Yikes.

Erskine received a double-minor for roughing, while Phaneuf was sent off with a two-minute minor for roughing.

So, about that contact with the linesman. It probably wasn’t as bad or as malicious as it looked, but still, anytime a player knocks a ref out of the way like that it looks a little wild. In most cases unless the official in question files a complaint with the league nothing usually comes out of it, and since he didn’t receive any sort of a penalty on the ice, that will probably be the end of it.

But good news, fans of truculence and violence. Erskine was eventually able to take part in a fight later in the period when he squared off with Colton Orr.

It did not go well for Orr.
