Western Sydney Wanderers lost for the second time this week as Adelaide United took all three points at the Coopers Stadium on Sunday. United scored early, thanks to Marcelo Carrusca, and held on to move back into a finals position while preventing the Wanderers from making a move on Brisbane Roar’s top spot.
Adelaide United hand Western Sydney Wanderers another loss
Marcelo Carrusca scored to push the Reds into fifth place.

In a game without a bevy of chances, it was Carrusca who made the most of his. Bruce Djite poked the ball from Ante Covic’s hands and Carrusca hammered home the game’s only goal in the fourth minute. Jeronimo had a good look of his own, after a perfect through ball from Carrusca, but dragged it wide while Shinji Ono fired a strong shot that required a good save from Eugene Galekovic. But on the whole, Adelaide controlled possession using a 4-5-1 and made Carrusca’s goal stand.
Michael Zullo came off injured in the first half but was replaced on the left wing by Awer Mabil. Ryan Griffiths also made his Adelaide debut, replacing Cameron Watson on the hour. But the story of the game was the play of the Argentine pair, Carrusca and Jeronimo.
Western Sydney remain in second place but are only two points clear of Central Coast Mariners. They’ll host Perth Glory on Sunday January 26 at Pirtek Stadium in the hopes of breaking a two-game losing streak. Adelaide get another home game next weekend in hosting Melbourne Heart on Saturday January 25.
