Newcastle Jets sacked manager Gary van Egmond on Monday, making the two-term Jets manager the A-League’s fifth coaching change in 2013/14. van Egmond joins Alistair Edwards and John Aloisi in the sacked department while Ange Postecoglou and Graham Arnold left for new jobs. The club announced the move, a mutual termination of van Egmond’s contract, via press release on Monday morning.

Newcastle native and Jets youth coach Clayton Zane will be the interim manager.

The Jets, who dropped out of the top six when Adelaide United beat Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday, have not won since December 20, and even lost to Melbourne Heart during the current streak. van Egmond will be replaced by Jets youth coach Clayton Zane, the former Socceroo and Newcastle native. Additionally, Jets striker Michael Bridges will be handed a player/coach role as an assistant to Zane for the rest of the current season.
Jets CEO Robbie Middleby explained the coaching change:
”In Clayton we have an ex-Socceroo who has played at a high level in Europe and is a talented young coach. Our youth team is currently enjoying its best season to date in the NYL, siting in second in the competition.
”We have confidence that Clayton will bring a new perspective to take the team forward this year and battle for Finals qualification.
“After not qualifying for the A-League Finals Series for the last three years, this is a vitally important season for the club and both parties, the club and Gary, agree the team requires a new voice and direction to take us forward.”
Zane will take over immediately but the club will begin a search for a full-time manager for the 2014/15 season and beyond.
