Mather will continue to play a large role in the team’s business operations and begin overseeing baseball operations as well.
He helped the team secure its new 17-year, $2 billion TV deal with DirecTV that will televise Mariners games through 2030, the club becoming one of several teams with insanely lucrative new deals that could continue push MLB payrolls to new highs.
Seattle has already indicated their readiness to spend by signing Robinson Cano to a 10-year, $240 million deal, but questions about team ownership and the current holding pattern they appear to be in will be challenging tasks for Mather to take on as he begins his tenure as team president.
