Mark Appel injury: Astros pitcher has appendectomy

The former first overall pick underwent surgery on Friday, but should be ready for spring training.

The Houston Astros announced that right-handed pitcher Mark Appel underwent an appendectomy in Houston on Friday. The operation concluded without any complications and should not affect the former first-round pick's ability to work out with the team.

“He will report to camp on time. Once he arrives in Spring Training, we’ll see where he is at health-wise and take it from there,” Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said in a press release. “We anticipate that he will either be ready to work out at the start of camp or very close to ready.”

Appel was the first overall pick in the 2013 draft and put together a 3.79 ERA in 38 innings pitched across two levels after signing with the team. He struck out 33 batters against nine walks in that time.

Luhnow also announced that left-handed pitcher Raul Valdes underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee earlier this week. He too is expected to report on time for spring training, though his recovery time has been estimated at four to six weeks. Valdes was claimed off waivers from the Phillies late in the 2013 season.
