Wellington Phoenix sign Roy Krishna from Auckland City

High scoring Fijian striker will join the club on Friday having played more than five years in New Zealand’s domestic competition.

Ernie Merrick has signed Roy Krishna from Auckland City to join the attacking corps at Wellington Phoenix. With Paul Ifill out for the season and last season’s top scorer Jeremy Brockie failing to find his mark this season, Merrick needed to add a piece to his group of attackers. In Krishna the Phoenix get a 26-year-old who has scored at a high rate in New Zealand’s ASB Premiership since 2008, mostly at Waitakere United. The 5’7” striker joined Auckland City ahead of the 2013/14 season and recently scored against Raja Casablanca in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Said Merrick in a club press release:

”When we played Auckland City pre-season the two players who stood out for me were Albert Riera and Roy Krishna. Riera did a good, simple job in midfield winning the ball and passing it well, and he has made the transition from ASB Championship to A-League with some top-class performances.

“Krishna was quick with close technical skills and an eye for goal, and when I researched his record I was impressed. He seems the sort of player capable of taking the next step and scoring goals in the A-League.”

Krishna has also scored fourteen times in twenty-two international matches with Fiji, his native country. He’ll join Wellington at training on Wednesday. Merrick, of course, added Riera back in early October.

The Phoenix also added, on a two-week replacement contract, Milos Lujic of Northcote City. The 23-year-old scored nineteen times last season. Lujic replaces Reece Caira, who is with Australia’s U22 team in Oman for the next fortnight.
