Carlos Hernandez signs on with Wellington Phoenix for another year

Ernie Merrick’s favorite Costa Rican will be staying in New Zealand through 2014/15, much to the delight of Phoenix fans.

Carlos Hernandez is staying in Wellington. The Phoenix announced, via press release, that the 31-year-old Costa Rican would remain with the club for an additional year. This after the star midfielder was reported to be frustrated in New Zealand just weeks ago. But now, with his family joining him in Wellington, Hernandez has pledged his future to Ernie Merrick and the Phoenix.

Hernandez’s quotes filled the release, with the Costa Rican explaining:

”I am really happy in Wellington. I have settled well and now my family is with me it is even better.

“The team is playing really good, attacking football and is more confident now that we have three wins in the last three games. I also think I will play better in the rest of the season and I’m sure we will make the finals. Once that is achieved, anything can happen in the playoffs.”

Now that Merrick has his man locked up for 2014/15, he can continue to focus on developing youth players from New Zealand and other areas. The Phoenix just added former Auckland City forward Roy Krishna yesterday and have, since Merrick’s arrival, stockpiled youngsters with Kiwi and Australian backgrounds.
