Fantasy football advice, Week 6: Who to start/sit for Panthers vs. Bengals

It’s a matchup of first-place teams in Cincinnati on Sunday.

Jared Wickerham

A pair of first-place teams will face off in Cincinnati Sunday. The Carolina Panthers won in Week 5 after a rough couple weeks to get to 3-2, sitting atop the NFC South, while the Cincinnati Bengals lost their first game of the season in Week 5, but still lead the AFC North at 3-1.

The injury list for the two teams is fairly long. Carolina tight end Greg Olsen is dealing with an ankle injury, but he's expected to play. As for the team's copious running backs, DeAngelo Williams is unlikely to play with an ankle injury, while Jonathan Stewart and Darrin Reaves both appear on track to play. On the Cincinnati side, wide receiver A.J. Green has already been ruled out for Sunday's game with a toe injury. Fellow wide receiver Marvin Jones is expected to be out as well, still dealing with an ankle injury.

The two teams play in Cincinnati at 1 p.m. ET Sunday, in what could be seen as a “contender or pretender” showdown. Take a look at the fantasy names of note:

PANTHERS

Start 'em: You didn't like the endgame numbers for Kelvin Benjamin from last week -- 38 yards and a fumble -- but he's averaged almost 10 targets a game, and is a fine mid-level WR2 right now. ... You don't like Greg Olsen's ankle injury, but all signs point to him playing, and with such a dearth of decent tight ends, he's still a must-use.

Start 'em?: The Panthers haven't been a great offense so far, keeping Graham Gano's production tempered a bit, but he's still put up at least seven points in four of five games. He's a fine kicker option. ... The Panthers' defense bounced back nicely in Week 5 after back-to-back disaster outings. The unit is back to respectability.

Sit 'em: It was nice to see Cam Newton run the ball a few more times in Week 5, but he's still not running like vintage Newton, and without a lot of passing yards, he's just not worth starting in most leagues. ... The Carolina running-back corps has been a really sad combination of underwhelming and injured, and that leaves the healthy ones -- Jonathan Stewart, Darrin Reaves, Chris Ogbonnaya -- unusable. ... We haven't seen much out of Jerricho Cotchery in his first year in Carolina.

Start in every league: Kelvin Benjamin, Greg Olsen

Start if you’re desperate: Graham Gano, Defense/special teams

Bench: Cam Newton, Jonathan Stewart, Darrin Reaves, Chris Ogbonnaya, Jerricho Cotchery

BENGALS

Start 'em: The Bengals are going to be run-heavy with all the injuries, which means even better things for Giovani Bernard than normal. ... Mohamed Sanu becomes a decent WR2 with Green and Jones being out. ... I'm willing to give the Bengals' defense a pass for their awful Week 5.

Start 'em?: It's possible that even Jeremy Hill could benefit from the Bengals' injuries. He's probably not worth starting, but there's an outside shot at production. ... Kicker Mike Nugent hasn't done much since Week 1.

Sit 'em: Andy Dalton's stock is low right now without Green and Jones; he's outside starting territory. ... Even with Tyler Eifert sidelined, Jermaine Gresham has done virtually nothing; don't expect that to change now.

Start in every league: Giovani Bernard, Mohamed Sanu, Defense/special teams

Start if you’re desperate: Jeremy Hill, Mike Nugent

Bench: Andy Dalton, Jermaine Gresham
