It was an entertaining first day at the Breeders’ Cup on Friday with four exciting races, and it was also one where the favorites came through with big performances. Hootenanny entered the Juvenile Turf as the prohibitive favorite at 3-1, and the 2-year-old colt did not disappoint, running one mile on the turf in 1:34.79 to win the race.
Breeders’ Cup 2014 results: Favorites come through on Friday
The favorites were dominant in Friday’s Breeders’ Cup contests, winning three of the four races.

Hootenanny’s win also snapped trainer Wesley Ward’s 0-for-16 skid.
Next up was the Dirt Mile. Goldencents ran one mile in 1:35.16 and paid $3.40, $2.60 and $2.10 as the 3-5 favorite on Friday at Santa Anita to win the race. Vicar’s In Trouble took control of the race early on, but a costly leg injury allowed Goldencents to surge into the lead and take home the win.
Next up was the Juvenile Fillies Turf, which Sunset Glow entered as a 7-2 favorite. However, this would be the first race in which the favorite did not win. Lady Eli cruised to a 3 1/2-length win over Sunset Glow, followed by Osaila and Prize Exhibit.
In the final race, the Longines Distaff took place with Untapable as a 5-2 favorite. The race was never really close -- Untapable raced out to an early lead and cruised to victory. This was her sixth win in seven races this season.
