For some games, it is difficult to find a storyline. When Random Middling Team A plays Random Middling Team B, there's only so much you can say. And then there are the weeks where Josh Gordon makes his 2014 debut for a surprise playoff contender. That one's easy, and it's what is happening in Sunday's Cleveland Browns-Atlanta Falcons matchup.
Fantasy football advice, Week 12: Who to start/sit for Browns vs. Falcons
There might be a lot to talk about in Cleveland-Atlanta Sunday, but most everything will be dwarfed by JOSH GORDON.
One player it looks like the Browns won't be getting back Sunday is tight end Jordan Cameron, who is expected to miss his fourth straight game as he deals with a concussion. The Falcons, meanwhile, lost running back Antone Smith for the season in Week 11 with a broken leg. The team is basically healthy from a fantasy perspective otherwise, though wide receiver Julio Jones was dealing with a illness during part of the week's practices.
Sunday’s game between the two teams, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, will be played in Atlanta. Let’s look at the fantasy names to consider:
BROWNS
Start 'em?: The departure of Ben Tate from Cleveland helps both Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West going forward, but the way the Browns use the two backs, it's super hard to trust either one. Crowell is the better start right now, but neither is better than a middling flex play. ... The love for Josh Gordon has gotten a little out of control this week; he's great, but he's still a football player playing his first game in 329 days. He's a fine flex play with a lot of upside, but the "must start" conversation is serious hyperbole. ... The Browns' defense fell apart last week, but had a run of several successful games in a row before that.
Sit 'em: Even with the return of Gordon, it's hard to use Brian Hoyer, who has gone for more than 16 fantasy points in a game only once all season, and that was back in Week 5. He's likely to pass more with Gordon in the fold, but it would have to go way up. ... If you're using a non-Gordon Cleveland receiver, you'd prefer Andrew Hawkins to Taylor Gabriel or Miles Austin, but the best bet is to ignore the lot. ... Filling in for Jordan Cameron, neither Gary Barnidge or Jim Dray has done much. ... After several weeks of good production, Billy Cundiff has five total fantasy points in his last two weeks. The kicking opportunities have dried up.
FALCONS
Start ‘em: If you have Julio Jones, you’re still using him despite his underwhelming stretch of 7.1 fantasy points a game since Week 3. He’s no longer a WR1, but he’s still easily a WR2.
Start 'em?: Just for fun, can you remember the last truly good Matt Ryan game? He had 19 fantasy points in Week 4, but hasn't gone for more than 15 since. He still has the weapons to be interesting, but relying on him at this point is terrifying. ... Steven Jackson is getting all the work, and doing just enough with it to justify his spot as a decent flex play. ... Roddy White has been the beneficiary of Jones' struggles, but eventually the team's other top receiver will rise back up. White's a flex play. ... Matt Bryant has 30 fantasy points in his last two games, but had three total in the two games before that.
Sit 'em: Week 1, Levine Toilolo put up seven fantasy points. He hasn't gone for more than three since, with 11 total points in that time. ... Even with a recently productive stretch, the Falcons' defense isn't close to trustworthy.
SUMMARY
Start in every league: Julio Jones
Start if you’re desperate: Isaiah Crowell, Terrance West, Josh Gordon, Cleveland defense
Bench: Brian Hoyer, Andrew Hawkins, Taylor Gabriel, Miles Austin, Gary Barnidge, Jim Dray, Billy Cundiff, Levine Toilolo, Atlanta defense
