Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao has been boxing’s longest rumored fight to never happen, but now it appears the two sides are inching closer to an agreement. Mayweather told ShowtimeSports he wants to fight Pacquiao on May 2.

“I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao,” Mayweather said. “We’ve been trying to make the fight happen years ago. We had problems with random blood and urine testing. I just want the fight to be on an even playing field. He’s in a very, very tight spot now. He lost to (Juan Manuel) Marquez, he lost to (Timothy) Bradley. Pay per view numbers are down extremely low, so he’s desperate.”

Mayweather said he would like a potential bout with Pacquiao to be his next fight. Negotiations between the two camps have begun.

Rumors of a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight go back to 2009. The main hangup in the fight has been Olympic-style drug testing, which Pacquiao has balked at.

The 37-year-old Mayweather remains undefeated at 47-0. The 35-year-old Pacquiao is 57-5-2.
